What do you guys think of getting dash cams? I live in Alberta so it's not like I have crazy scammers the way Russia does, but are they worth the investment? I would probably pick up this one:

CrzRsn has one (because obvious) and now I want one too. Recommended because who knows, when you have to chase a moose with a hockey stick on your way to Timmy's or whatever, you'll want a video.

The g1w or something like that gets rebadged a dozen different ways. I've made a few posts on here about it and know a few of the others have them as well. I think mine is the black box dawn cam from Amazon ~$40.
The video can go up to full 1080p though 720 is sufficient. Audio not so great much I keep the mic on mine turned off. Bunch of cool features like auto on, record, g shock sensor , etc.

I don't think a super high def dash cam is absolutely necessary, but trust me, in an accident situation, it could really save your ass. I got into an "accident" with a guy effectively trying to scam me by cutting me off and jacking on the brakes so that I hit him (rear end collision, rear car would be found at fault). luckily a third party who saw the whole thing stepped in and backed up my side of the story so the dude got in lots of trouble, but had it not been for that person I would have been screwed. Had I had a dashcam at that time it would have again verified my side of the story.
So yes, worth while.

As Yamahog said, I have one. Two actually. A Mini 0803 hardwired into the Mustang and a Livue LB100HD in the Miata. I can't recommend the Mini 0803 enough. It comes in a bunch of different flavors (internal memory options and GPS) and is around $100 on Amazon. I got the 8GB internal memory +GPS model just because at the time there was a great deal for it and since it qualified for free shipping (while the others didn't for some reason) in the end it came out to be the same amount as if I had ordered a no internal memory + no GPS model. Can't say the GPS feature has come in handy yet, but its nice to know its there. As far as that Hawkeye camera is concerned, I can't say I know anything about it but it looks huge, especially with that suction mount. Its also a clear knock off of the G1W which is a decenish camera but I personally would not get an original one, let alone a knock off.
Two good resource for all things dashcam are Techmoan's youtube channel and www.dashcamtalk.com.
Start by watching this 'intro to dashcams' video, it explains a lot you need to know when choosing a camera
And a review of the 0803 that I have

Is GPS really necessary? couldn't it hurt your case assuming you were speeding, even by a little? Amazon.com isn't an option, and no 0803's are on the .ca site. what is the practical difference between the 0801 and the 0803?

Lol good old alberta i havent seen drivers as bad anywheres else. There was this indian (from india, not the other ones) couple in a caravan with no brake lights, i got beside them to try and tell them their lights werent working but i think my sidewinders on the shortbox gmc i had scared them.I still wonder if they ever got rearended.
I also seen a hit and run, which turned into a chase. Both of these incidents in edmonton, millwoods area. Also god damn truckers hawling pipe that dont clean the gravel off their traielrs, cracked the windshield in a new work truck once.

GPS isn't necessary and I wasn't going to get it until it turned out to be cheaper to get the more loaded model. It could in theory hurt your case if you were speeding, but I've also heard stories where someone was pulled over for speeding and they were able to prove that they were actually going the limit using the GPS on their dashcam, and show the judge that the radar gun must've hit the speeder in the next lane.
The differences between the 0801 and 0803 are very minor. The 0801 will record in 1080p while the 0803 goes up to 1296p, which is utterly useless (I have my 0803 set to 1080 just to save card space). The one thing that sold the 0803 for me was that it has slightly better night capture quality. I have 5 friends that use the 0801 in their cars, and all are very happy with it, so if you can't get the 0803, it still is a great camera.
Here is a side by side comparo of the 2 mounted in the same car at the same time.

Looks legit on the surface. Correct camera and everything. Haven't heard of 16GB models, but they could've just added that.

The photos initially showed 1080p full hd, then I asked to make sure it was 1296p and they confirmed it was and updated the photos.
